Broder Daniel – Shoreline

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Today’s daily sound is another rewind, as I am dipping back into my collection to pull out one of my personal favorites. This track is by Broder Daniel, a Swedish indie-rock band that enjoyed a bit of whirlwind success back in the early 90s, fueling them through a career that would last somewhere around two decades, despite the fact is came on mostly in fits and starts. Like many rock acts before them, they are probably remembered as much for their volatile instability as anything else, but if you ask me, their music is much more interesting than all of the drama, breakups and A Clockwork Orange inspired fashion statements.

Jens Lekman is Bigger Than Love

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Three years without any new Jens Lekman material can feel a lot more like thirty, but the Swedish indie-pop sensation has finally returned to croon his way back into all of our hardened hearts. So where has he been hiding all of this time, you ask? Well sadly, it would seem that the breakout success [...]

Nicolas Makelberge – Dying in Africa

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Back when I first fell upon Karl X Johan’s Flames, I commented that the song did not at all sound like the work of two musicians just now making their debut. Little did I know at the time just how spot on that observation actually was. Turns out Karl x Johan is the joint venture of established electronic musician Kalle J (who apparently brings his love for sampled strings in tow) and former Nicolas Makelberge vocalist Johan Tuvesson, which is all information that I would’ve easily discovered with even a tiny bit of elbow grease. And to make matters worse, I actually had some of Nicolas Mackelberge’s serene synth-pop already floating about in my collection all the while.

Rigas – Tonite

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Rigas is otherwise known as Henrik Von Euler, front-man for Swedish electro-poppers Parken, and possibly the busiest musician in all of Scandinavia. Juggling two separate projects would be more than enough work for most people, but Henrik doesn’t stop there, having also taken on everything from remixing to production, which has led to him having a decade spanning discography that is as long as my arm. And apparently, that kind of obnoxious ambition is good for a lot more than inspiring murderous levels of jealousy in me, because his music just so happens to be really fucking good.

Love & Happiness – Sweet Nothing (Someone Who Stays)

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Throughout the past decade, most of the people I consider my closest friends have slowly taken off one by one to all manner of far-flung locales, probably in search of something better than another night helping me to not choke on my own vomit. I guess that’s just how it goes as time slowly ticks on, though there’s also the distinct possibility it was just something I said (or maybe it was just the vomit). Regardless, it mostly sucks big time, and the Swedish rock outfit Love & Happiness can relate.

Kenny Motherfucking Starfighter

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Life is full of tragedies, and I just stumbled upon another one today. Somehow, despite having a longtime affection for (and being fairly obsessive about) certain elements of Scandinavian media (not to mention having a direct line of contact to that part of the globe, thanks to my roommate and Automaton cohort Lars), I have remained completely unaware of the glory that is Kenny motherfucking Starfighter.

Let The Right Subtitles In. Please. (Updated)

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

I am no stranger to professing my love for Let The Right On In, the Swedish vampire movie that captured the #1 spot on my favorite films of 2008 list. My catch-all word for it is sublime, because every damn thing about it was just that. What is not sublime is Magnolia Pictures completely botching the U.S release for reasons I won’t even attempt to understand. As fate would have it, I had yet to plunk down for my own personal copy of the movie on Blu-Ray, and I couldn’t be happier about that now that it’s been reported by Icons of Fright (thanks, guys) that the subtitles on the U.S release are completely fubar.
