Future Islands – Tin Man

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Baltimore’s Future Islands are the second band in recent memory who deserved so much more attention than I gave them the first go around. And if it wasn’t for the fact that I happen to know an ex-Maryland native with fantastic taste in music, that might never have changed. Well, thank goodness for friends, because now you couldn’t pry their melodrama-prone post-punk from my cold, dead hands, try as you might! In fact, the more cold and dead your hands are, the more you’re probably going to love these guys.

Motorama – Alps

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Over the course of two EPs and as many years, Russia’s Motorama have been quietly cultivating their own personal Joy Division revival. Right off the break these Factory fanatics were writing circles around long-standing post-punk conventions, though I don’t think anyone would argue that the results weren’t often rigidly similar to the well-loved architects of the genre.

Golden Glow – Adore Me

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

You getting sick of reading the words “post-punk” yet? Will it help if I tell you this particular band isn’t actually from Scandinavia? Golden Glow are group of young Brits who make throwback rock so dead-on authentic you might as well be listening to it in Manchester during the summer of 1980. Sadly, we are relegated to a point in history that’s much less awesome than that, but at least we have the internet, right?

CatPeople – Goodbye Angel

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

If you’ve ever punished yourself with slogging through the entirety of my best-of lists, then you may recall reading about Barcelona post-punk act CatPeople and their 2008 album What’s the Time Mr. Wolf?. Apparently, despite the shameful lack of global press, that album sold well enough to merit a re-release earlier this year, and it comes packaged with a brand new bonus disc titled Reel & Wolf EP.

Battle – Children

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Decided to dig through my collection for another “golden oldie”, and this time I came up with the defunct British band Battle. Of all the post-punk rock outfits that cropped up on the heels of Bloc Party, Battle are quite possibly the most criminally unappreciated, and by my money, one of the best. On top of that, they were nothing if not prolific, releasing a steady stream of singles and an EP during their career, before culminating in what would turn out to be both their debut and farewell album, Break the Banks, in 2007

Red Drapes – First Hand

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

I don’t think anyone is going to be too shocked to find out that today’s Daily Sound is more rainy day post-punk, this time in the form of recently debuted Londoners Red Drapes. Like most of their black happy brethren, these guys can certainly dole out their fair share of misery, but they balance it damn well against lush melodies and rock solid hooks in a way that very much recalls the legendary Echo & the Bunnymen at their most pop friendly.

Chapel Club – O Maybe I

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Chapel Club are a fresh-faced London act that have been rapidly accelerating in the ol’ hype department throughout the last year, rocketing them from a big bunch of nobodies to hotly contested label bait practically overnight. But hype isn’t such a bad thing when the internet hive mind actually gets it right, and this band’s moody post-punk is very right by my standards.

Love & Happiness – Sweet Nothing (Someone Who Stays)

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Throughout the past decade, most of the people I consider my closest friends have slowly taken off one by one to all manner of far-flung locales, probably in search of something better than another night helping me to not choke on my own vomit. I guess that’s just how it goes as time slowly ticks on, though there’s also the distinct possibility it was just something I said (or maybe it was just the vomit). Regardless, it mostly sucks big time, and the Swedish rock outfit Love & Happiness can relate.

The Drums – Forever and Ever Amen

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

The Drums’ debut EP, Summertime!, was the one release I wrestled with most when it came to cobbling together my favorites of 2009. But despite the fact my stereo gave the band a lot of love last year, I could tell that EP was only hinting at the greatness to come, and that’s thanks largely to the handful of album tracks that steadily crept out along the way. Now that album is just around the corner (June 7), and here’s yet another reason to grow impatient.

Carlos D’s Next Exit

Monday, May 10th, 2010

It was announced this weekend that ultra-famous and ultra-lanky Interpol bassist Carlos D would be leaving his bandmates behind to blaze a new career path. According the the official announcement on Interpol’s site, the group actually completed recording of their new album just prior to Carlos informing them of his decision, so it would appear that future plans won’t be derailed too much by his sudden departure.

Interpol – Lights

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Okay, I admit this Daily Sound may be a bit on the lazy side (what with this song already being old hat going into the weekend), but it seemed only appropriate with the announcement of Carlos D’s departure from Interpol to put a little focus back on to the amazingness of Lights. Besides, Interpol decided to drop this musical bomb on the world just days before I got my site back up, and I never got a chance to proclaim just how much of a fancy I took to it.

Editors “Eat Raw Meat = Blood Drool” Video

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

An Editors music video with a demonic Mickey Mouse dancing on what looks vaguely like the Star of David. Yeah, it’s sort of a must see.
