Trouble is Frankenstein’s Business

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Transforming Frankenstein’s monster into a tough-as-bolts (sorry, I couldn’t help myself), Philip Marlowe-esque P.I. is what scientists refer to as a damn good idea. In fact, it’s a stroke of brilliance I would be happy to claim as my own, but the credit all goes to Kevin Grievoux, who also happens to be the guy who created the Underworld series.

The Bigger They Are…

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Films adapted from video games have had a rather troubling history, if I am being kind. That’s why it’s rare to see anyone get overly excited when a new one heads our way, particularly when the titles attached are often the likes of Far Cry, or Bloodrayne (I wouldn’t even bother playing the latter, so I am sure as hell not going to condemn my eyes to just watching it). On the other hand, it’s absolutely huge news when someone says they’re making a Shadow of the Colossus movie, and in this case that someone would be Sony Pictures.

Howard vs. Lovecraft

Friday, March 27th, 2009

It was announced today that Universal Studios has snatched up the film rights to Image Comics’ The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft. I have a major soft spot for the work of Lovecraft (mixing horror and genius is a good way to tug at my heartstrings), and wasn’t even aware this comic book existed, so this is big news on all fronts. What’s more, the studio is targeting Ron Howard to direct, which makes for one hell of an interesting combination, even if he’s still in in the maybe column.

Watchmen

Zack Snyder pulls off the impossible, creating one of the finest superhero films ever to hit the silver screen in the process.

Watchmen + Cartoon = Awesome

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Alan Moore’s Watchmen flirted with the animated form not long ago with the digital release of the somewhat poorly realized “motion comic”, which actually happened to be an interesting idea that was tragically marred by the fact they had one dude handle the entirety of the voice-work (and that includes his husky interpretation of all the female characters). I know their heart was in the right place, but if you seriously know so few women that you can’t find even one to do a tiny bit of voice acting for you, then working on a motion comic version of anything should be the least of your concerns.

Lizzie The Zombie Slayer

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

If there’s one complaint English lit majors are always making about the work of Jane Austen, it’s where are all the damn zombies at, woman? Well, suffer no longer, classic literature snobs, because television comedy writer Seth Grahame-Smith (How To Survive A Horror Movie) has got you covered! Thanks to the wonderful world of public domain, Grahame-Smith has managed to update Austen’s Pride and Prejudice into the horror/satire about Elizabeth Bennet and her three undead hunting sisters that it was always meant to be (titled Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, naturally).

Youngblood Movie Planned, Relief Efforts TBA

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

‘ve never been one to mince words, so I’ll just come right out and say that I thought Brett Ratner thoroughly curb-stomped the dreams of mutant lovers everywhere with the nigh-unbearable X-Men: The Last Stand. Luckily, I have about as much remaining attachment to the X-Men franchise as I do parachute pants, so all that wasted celluloid was hardly something worth getting up in arms about. The same would likely be true for Ratner’s latest foray into comic book-to-film adaptations, but only if there wasn’t something so strangely insulting about someone actually making a Youngblood movie.

What happens when Neil Gaiman and Henry Selick team up? Very good things.

First Look At Jim Carrey As Ol’ Scrooge

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

t appears Jim Carrey makes for a mighty fine Ebenezer Scrooge, which is what I’d call a damn good sign that Robert Zemeckis is on the right track with his upcoming animated adaptation of the Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol. Zemeckis will always have a place in my heart for giving the world Back to the Future (and, to a lesser extent, Back to the Future parts 2 & 3), but I can’t say I am the biggest fan of his recent string of mo-cap features.

Shazam! Movie Takes a Dive

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Every comic book nerd knows that as far as film adaptations go, few casting choices are as self-explanatory as putting Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the role of Captain Marvel’s arch-nemesis, Black Adam (illustrated here, for your benefit, with my kick-ass Photoshop magic). As far as easy decisions go, it’s up there with not wandering into traffic, or ever purchasing Crocs. But alas, it seems destiny must wait, as Warner Bros has officially given the axe to the much anticipated (by me, anyway) Shazam! adaptation, based upon the script by John August.
