UK director Neil Marshall is certainly an unpredictable fellow. He kicked off his career with a picture about soldiers battling werewolves, and then moved on to tackling creepy cave monsters before eventually diving into head-first into the realm of crazy, Carpenter-esque sci-fi. So how does a director flesh out a resume like that? With a Roman war epic, naturally.

While Machete is getting positively drowned in a sea of pre-release hype, it’s not the only fake grindhouse trailer that’s currently being made into a full-length film. Prior to the release of the original double-feature, Robert Rodriguez held a contest asking fans to make their own little trainwreck of a trailer, and Jason Eisener’s Hobo With a Shotgun snatched up the crown. While few of us actually got to see Jason’s work in theaters, there’s just no stopping the twin barrels of hobo justice once they get going, and soon this insanely ridiculous bit of hobosploitation will be let loose upon the entire world as an actual feature.

The trailer led you to believe this movie was just Superbad dressed up in tights. The trailer lied to you.

Can the producers of the Resident Evil films create a “terrifying sci-fi thriller” that’s any good? Hell, can the producers of the Resident Evil films create anything that’s any good? Well, all presumptions aside, the trailer for their next release, Pandorum, actually looks damn decent. I wouldn’t exactly bet my life on it not being this year’s Babylon AD, but casting Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster as the leads gives them a hell of a leg up (this, and The Horsemen, makes two interesting Quaid films this year).

Much to my dismay, Film Noir has yet to make what one would call a major cinematic comeback, and we’re long since the days when when hard-boiled detectives ruled the screen. But perhaps that’s what makes it all the more exciting when a new entry into the once thriving genre pops up, even more so when it’s a movie as peculiar as The Perfect Sleep.

Japan is a country that is no stranger to being ravaged at the hands/claws/laser-shooting beaks of various skyscraper-sized monsters, and that’s probably why they love their humongous heroes so damn much. Well, all except for poor Daisato. This 40-something slacker is the subject of the upcoming mockumentary Big Man Japan, which explores the lonely life of a guy who single-handily protects an entire country, only to get yelled at for making a mess of it in the process.

Serbian directors Milan Konjevic and Milan Todorovic aren’t going to win any awards for creative titling with their upcoming zombie flick Zone of the Dead, but the newly released trailer isn’t too shabby. The movie is about two Interpol agents who have to escort a criminal to back to Belgrade, and then yadda, yadda, yadda… All you really need to know is there seems to be plenty of blood, guts, and people diving through the air while shooting the shit out of things. Oh, and did I mention Ken “Motherfuckin’ Dawn of the Dead” Foree?

Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds is easily one of the most anticipated films of the year, and now everyone can finally set eyes on Brad Pitt and his Nazi killing crew in motion for the first time (not counting the Entertainment Tonight premier, because, well, why would you?). It’s a damn meaty teaser, and the minute and a half of footage left me more excited than ever to see the movie. It’d be hard as hell to top Reservoir Dogs / Pulp Fiction-era Tarantino, but this WWII action film meets spaghetti western just might be up there.

Having recently reviewed Taken, French action director Pierre Morel’s attempt to show the world just how many ways Liam Neeson can karate chop you into submission, it seemed only natural to follow it up with the trailer for Banlieue 13: Ultimatum, the sequel to his 2004 opus, Banlieue 13 (that’s District B13 to us Yanks). This time around, Morel is unfortunately not along for the ride, but much like its predecessor, B13:U (don’t blame me for the acronym) is written by Luc Besson, and stars parkour godfather David Belle as piss-poor man-monkey Leïto.

Thai director Prachya Pinkaew threw down the gauntlet with 2003′s Ong-bak, a bone-crunching martial arts feast that served as an excellent showcase for the awe-inspiring Tony Jaa. Unfortunately, the formidable duo was only able to get one more film under their belts (2005′s highly entertaining The Protector) before having a well-publicized falling out, leaving Prachya to search for a new star to herald, while Jaa alternated between directing Ong-bak 2 and going bonkers off in the jungle somewhere.
