It was announced this weekend that ultra-famous and ultra-lanky Interpol bassist Carlos D would be leaving his bandmates behind to blaze a new career path. According the the official announcement on Interpol’s site, the group actually completed recording of their new album just prior to Carlos informing them of his decision, so it would appear that future plans won’t be derailed too much by his sudden departure. In fact, Interpol have already roped in a couple of “illustrious players”—their words, not mine—to join them as they venture out onto the road soon. Keep your fingers crossed that at least one of them is Buckethead, if not both.
I have to say that I am a tad bit surprised that Carlos is jumping ship right about now, mostly because I have very high hopes for the forthcoming album—especially considering how completely awesome the recently released single Lights is. But I suppose if the rest of the tracks live up to that promise, he’ll have at least made his exit on a high note. As far as where he goes from here, that’s probably anyone’s guess, but my money is on Mr. Dengler trying his hand at some acting (while keeping “celebrity DJ” as a fallback career). Though I am not entirely sure just how badly the world needs two Crispin Glovers, even if one of them walks around sporting an empty gun holster.
He’s actually said in several interviews over the last few years that composing soundtracks for films is taking up an increasing amount of his time and attention. Whether he was referring to real or hypothetical film work, I have no clue, but from what little I remember it sounded interesting. I’m sure this isn’t the last we’ve heard of him.
I did a little research after your comment, and it turns out he’s moved from simply doing soundtracks to actually creating the movie itself. He recently completed a short-film called My Friends Told Me About You, and it’s playing in NYC at the moment.
It’ll be interesting to see how smart of a career move this was, but like I said, he’ll always have celebrity DJ in the wings.
