Though I’ve made fairly frequent mention of Hurts around these parts, they’re far from the only sharply-dressed 80s revivalists currently blazing a path across England. In fact, Brighton’s Mirrors have been cutting off their piece of that tasty pie for well over two years now, having risen from the ashes of former NME darlings Mumm-Ra (no doubt deciding to close up shop shortly after Juno went and made the Thundercats so horribly uncool). But even with only an EP and a handful of singles currently to their name, it’s already incredibly clear that indie-rock’s loss is most definitely synth-pop’s gain.
Hide and Seek is one of the band’s earlier demos, but it couldn’t be any sexier if it was Billy Dee Williams softly whispering in your ear. These guys seriously pull all of the right pages from the Vince Clarke playbook, with the inevitable Yazoo comparisons only being heightened by the fact that frontman James New is quite capable of turning in a vocal that sounds about as much like the ultra-sultry Alison Moyet as any full-grown male ever should. I am not sure I even have enough words to describe the awesome that happens when you lay such pipes over the meticulous weaving of classic pads and the gentle tremolo of a guitar, so I’ll just go with this one: Love.
Mirrors are scheduled to release their debut album later this year on Skint, and you can expect to read more about it on here as soon as information becomes available.
