Way back in the days when MTV didn’t spend all of its time sucking loads of ass (an idea that seems practically utopian in light of their recent programming), they hosted a sketch comedy show called The State, and it was often hilarious. Hell, even when the show didn’t make you laugh, it was still hypnotically bizarre, and the ridiculous antics had plenty of us gen x/y teens tuning in every week for three seasons. But despite the show’s devoted fan-base clamoring for a DVD release, it has remained completely and utterly unavailable for purchase.
That’s all about to change.
Finally, after years of pestering (not my pestering, mind you, I leave that sort of thing to other angry nerds), MTV has finally managed to scrape together every episode of The State and doll ‘em all up in one slick package, which will grace the shelves of your local Best Buy beginning July 14. Old fans can happily spend a little bit of time catching up with Doug, Barry, and Levon, and you younger folks can at long last bear witness to the show that launched the careers of comedians like Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, Ken Marino and Thomas Lennon. It’ll be interesting to see just how kind time has been to these sketches, but you can be damn sure I’ll be buying a copy to find out.
