The Wild Things Are. At Last.

Young Max had no idea what he meant by “Let's make the beast with two backs”.It seems like forever ago that the Where The Wild Things Are live-action adaptation was announced, and considering that it was almost a decade back, it’s not hard to understand why. Many film fans have been following the story of this production pretty closely throughout the years, and when rumors began to circle in early 2008 that Warner Bros. was getting ready to butcher the film, due to poor reception by children at test screenings, things began to look bleak (as if the opinions of half-people should actually amount to anything). Well, I am happy as hell to say that the first trailer is here, and Spike Jonze’s vision looks to have survived fully intact. That means when the studio came forward and announced they wouldn’t be screwing with him, they actually meant it for once.

At the risk of dabbling in the fine art of internet hyperbole, this film looks fan-fucking-tastic. With Jonze in the director’s seat, and Dave Eggers sharing script duties with him, expectations were running outrageously high to say the least, but so far no dreams appear to be dashed. Indeed, when you can watch a trailer after nearly a decade of waiting — a trailer for a film based on what is arguably one of the greatest children’s books ever penned no less — and not be in the least bit disappointed, something damn noteworthy has happened.

See it below. Be amazed.

Where The Wild Things Are
is scheduled to hit theaters on October 16, 2009. That’s two weeks after my birthday! Not that any of you care.

  1. Since I hadn’t heard anything about this, total radio (or, in these Modern Times, internet) blackout, for quite some time now, I’d assumed the project had been scrapped, or might eek itself out in a straight-to-DVD release, butchered beyond all comprehension.

I’m glad that all of my worst fears did not pan out, though, I must confess, I’m confused — this is like a happy ending to a Smiths song, things like this aren’t meant to happen, artists aren’t meant to survive battles against The Machine (though Snyder emerged, and I’m glad the Jonze/Eggers team have joined him). What kind of world are we living in?!
