It’s hardly a surprise anymore when Steven Soderbergh takes a break from blockbuster film-making to craft an intimate little arthouse picture, but I highly doubt anyone was betting on him ever casting an adult-film star in one of them. And while much hubbub has already been made about seasoned porn pro (that’s putting it nicely) Sasha Grey featuring in The Girlfriend Experience, it’s safe to say the newly released trailer won’t be settling any arguments about her acting abilities (or lack thereof).
On the other hand, this completely dialogue free introduction to Soderbergh’s look into the life of a high-priced call girl (not exactly a stretch for Grey) has my interest piqued beyond simply wanting to find out how much of a train wreck she winds up being in the role. The whole things feels nicely detached, which seems fitting considering the subject matter, and it’s a confidently modest teaser to say the least. Though I will also admit that my favorite thing about it is quite likely the supremely kick-ass percussion featured throughout, so I don’t know what that says exactly (other than that’s one hell of a drummer).
