I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to mention a little animated movie from Ireland called Brendan and the Secret of Kells, and now seemed like as good a time as any. This 2D work of art is the feature debut from animator Tomm Moore, and my eyes are so supremely fond of it, I plan on getting through this entire article without making one single off-color remark! Honestly, this movie doesn’t require a lot of set up, because anyone with a working pair of peepers should be fully on board once they glimpse the images and trailer below. But if you’re wondering, the story revolves around a young boy who gets wrapped up in helping complete the famous illustrated Bible, The Book of Kells, and his epic journey finds him confronting enemies both real and supernatural (including some sweet Vikings). And despite the fact the plot centers around Bible creation, word on the street says you do not need to actually get your God on to enjoy this film (good thing for us heathens). Wait… was that off-color? Whatever, watch below, and be amazed! Now if only some smart, handsome distributor types would snatch this up and give it the American release it so obviously deserves. Are you listening, lazy Hollywood fat-cats??

Wow, that’s absolutely beautiful looking. It really makes one question the death of 2d animation. Nothing against the amazing films that Pixar makes, but CG films just fail to invoke the same emotions in me that something like this does.
Yeah, I figured you, of all people, would dig it. And I agree, there’s something about 2D art that just can’t be, or at least hasnt been yet, replicated in 3D. But, at least it’s making a bit of a comeback. It’ll be interesting to see how Disney’s The Princess and the Frog does, because it’s sure to be a major factor in their pursuit of future hand-drawn projects. I thought the teaser was meh, and the lightning bug was pretty unfunny (I wasn’t offended like so many people, probably because I have all of my teeth, but that doesn’t mean I actually laughed), yet I’ll probably support it either way, just to make my love of 2D heard at the box-office. I have nothing but respect for Pixar (not including Cars – ugh), but we need more of both mediums.
gotta love the big black friar with the GIGANTIC red lips. questionable depictions of minorities aside, this looks pretty damn awesome.
just noticed: even in french, its sounds like the dude be doin’ some jive-talkin’. awesome.
Everyone knows there’s no such thing as racism across the ocean. That’s purely an American invention!
