It seems like forever and a day since I put on a little Film School—and much, much longer since I discovered their self-titled album sitting on a Tower Records shelf (back in the halcyon days of youth when such a thing was even possible). I guess a three year long hiatus doesn't typically do wonders for the attention span of your fanbase, but these west coast natives have drummed up one hell of a reason to reconnect with the instantly likable Heart Full of Pentagons.

If The Frank & Walters don't qualify as criminally unappreciated, then I am not sure I know what band does. Back in the early 90s, these guys began clawing their way to the top of the UK indie scene with a steady string of well-received releases, and they continued their slow but steady rise up the charts for more than a decade. Yet despite all of that hard work, and their increasing commercial and critical success back home, they somehow managed to completely miss getting swept up in the britpop invasion that made bands like Oasis, Blur and Pulp into international superstars.

I may have barely existed when the bands of the new wave movement first began to enter their heyday, but I grew like a weed alongside their music, so news doesn't get much bigger for me than the return of one of the genre's pioneers—especially after a decade-plus of complete radio silence. September 6, 2010 will be the first time the world puts its grubby little mitts all over a new Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark album since the release of Universal way back in 1996, and it is going to be a very fine day indeed.

Fifteen years ago, when young Canucks Jake Fairley and Jim Sayce dissolved their high school band Robot Jocks (which was sadly just a few letters shy of sharing a name with an awesomely terrible 90s movie about a bunch of jerks making with big metal fisticuffs), I seriously doubt they had any idea that they would one day reunite way out in the Netherlands to form post-punk outfit Bishop Morocco. Luckily for us, they both capably managed to fend off any number of questionable life choices that would have led them down the path of living out the lyrics to Summer of '69, and instead wound up as two grown men recording an entire albums worth of atmospheric 80s flashbacks under the cold rains of northern Europe.

You wouldn't know it from the disturbing lack of attention from the blogosphere, but Rickard Folke has been diligently plugging away as post-punk act Boygirlme for over half of a decade now. In fact, this Swedish musician has somewhere in the neighborhood of ten releases cataloged already (dating all the way back to 2004), and somehow still had the time to co-found the crucial synth-pop duo Degrees along the way.

Maybe it's just me, but the more Young Empires distance themselves from the "punk" in their dance-punk, the more I take a shine to them. Though these Canadian upstarts have been lighting the net on fire for most of the year now, it wasn't until the woozy electro-pop ditty Glory of the Night that my own interest really began to kick into gear. And if there was any lingering doubt about whether or not this would prove to be an all-too-fleeting affair between this band and I, White Doves has come along to squash that completely.

If you're looking for listening material that immediately conjures up daydreams of Beverly Hills Cop, or building your Vice City empire, then look no further than the Russian retro-futurists Tesla Boy. In fact, these three guys make synth-pop so unapologetically bathed in neon-tinted nostalgia, you should probably be arrested for listening to it in public while not driving a Delorean. Every song they write sounds like it's making slow, sweet love to the 1980s inside your ears, and there's a definite reason why their 2009 debut EP had electro fans giddily singing their praises.

If you were as stoked about Chapel Club's O Maybe I as I was, then you'll be happy to hear the band has returned to give away a brand new single titled The Shore. Everything I was saying about these mopey Brits a few months back is as true today as ever, but I am especially glad to see that it appears there will be no wanting for more writhing, minor-key brood outs in the band's future. Not that I expected them to suddenly come out sounding like a poor man's They Might Be Giants, but it's reassuring none-the-less.

Long weekends quickly bleeding into the start of the work week don't make for easy writing, so it's lucky for me that the Danish band Villa Nah is making this easy. I could start by saying that they're a talented bunch of new romantics from Scandinavia and you'd probably already have a good idea of where I am going with this, but it's more effective to simply point out that this is one of the two groups that OMD handpicked to join them on tour in support of their upcoming album History of Modern.

Today's daily sound is another rewind, as I am dipping back into my collection to pull out one of my personal favorites. This track is by Broder Daniel, a Swedish indie-rock band that enjoyed a bit of whirlwind success back in the early 90s, fueling them through a career that would last somewhere around two decades, despite the fact is came on mostly in fits and starts. Like many rock acts before them, they are probably remembered as much for their volatile instability as anything else, but if you ask me, their music is much more interesting than all of the drama, breakups and A Clockwork Orange inspired fashion statements.
