Next Gets a Trailer

February 23rd, 2007 by alan s.

The Golden ManHollywood is set to crap all over yet another Philip K. Dick story come this April, as Next, an adaptation of his short, The Golden Man, hits screens. Watching this trailer gave me horrible flashbacks to The Island, as what should be an exciting sci-fi piece quickly degenerates into an endless series of CG car parts flying everywhere. You’d think with all the money they no doubt dumped into this project, they could’ve scraped together enough to include the mutants and dystopian setting of the original. Instead what we get is Nicolas Cage, and his majestically flowing hair-piece, narrowly escaping one disaster after another. That sucking sound you’re now hearing is the entirety of the internet collectively yawning at once.

It seems that Philip K. Dick has had some unfortunate luck with movies in recent years. But seeing as how he’s been dead since the eighties, it’s pretty forgivable. What exactly is Nic Cage’s excuse?

Bore yourself to death with the trailer here.

  • With all the talented writers, directors, and producers there obviously are in Hollywood (and beyond) today - how can they fuck another one of Dick’s novels? I would have thought the collective, “Oh, ummm… okay” after ‘A Scanner Darkly’ would have made it difficult to even be able to get a Philip K. Dick project off the ground without some sort of wonderful initiative and vision. Again Hollywood has proven me wrong.

Fuckers. They’ll do just about anything on the vague hope of a dollar or two.

  • Weatherman definitely wasn’t bad, though it’s certainly becoming pretty popular to hate on Nic these days. Personally, I think he’s great in certain roles, he’s just picked a whole lot of the wrong ones lately.

By the way, I saw what you did there. And I laughed.
